Bachman Lake Park — Dallas’s first reservoir, now a three-mile loop under the flight path

Bachman Lake is older than every other body of water in this city’s park system and it was built for a job it lost more than a century ago. In 1903 Dallas dammed Bachman Branch to create a municipal water supply; the resulting 205-acre lake proved far too small for a city that was growing at speed, and by 1911 the answer was White Rock Lake instead. What Bachman kept was a shoreline, and around that shoreline the city eventually wrapped a paved loop of a bit over three miles that now functions as one of the most democratic public spaces in Dallas. On any given evening it holds joggers, quinceañera photo shoots, rowing crews putting in from the boathouse, anglers on the bank, families grilling, and a steady procession of aircraft dropping in over the water toward Dallas Love Field, whose northwestern boundary runs along the lake. That last detail is why plane spotters treat this park as a destination, and it costs nothing.

What’s inside

This is a working neighborhood park rather than a designed showpiece, and its layout reflects that: the water in the middle, the loop around it, and a rim of facilities on the landward side placed where people actually live. Northwest Dallas surrounds it — a heavily Latino, dense, family-oriented part of the city on three sides, with the airport on the fourth and the wealthier Bluffview area at the western edge.

• A boathouse and small marina supporting rowing and sailing, with the calmest water in the early morning before the wind comes up.
• Fishing from the banks and piers, with the lake regularly stocked with catfish; bass and sunfish are also caught here.

Getting there and practicalities

Bachman Lake is in northwest Dallas, wedged between the airport and the surrounding residential neighborhoods, and it is one of the easiest large parks in the city to reach without a car: Bachman Station sits immediately beside the park and is served by the DART Green and Orange lines, so the walk from platform to shoreline is a matter of minutes. Parking lots ring the landward side and fill on weekend afternoons. Entry is free, the park is open daily from early morning until late, and restrooms are available at the recreation center. Allow an hour to an hour and a half for a full walking loop, twenty minutes to ride it, or a couple of hours if you are bringing food and children. On the Texas heat, be realistic: the loop has mature pecans and elms along parts of the shore, but long stretches — particularly across the dam and along the open western side — have no shade whatsoever, and the water offers no relief because the lake is not for swimming. From June through September, walk before nine in the morning or after seven in the evening, carry water, and treat the aquatic center rather than the lake as the cooling option. One recent change is worth knowing about: the trail was raised, widened and made ADA-accessible over the dam as part of the reconstruction completed in 2026, so route descriptions written before then may not match what you find on the ground.

When to visit

Spring is the park’s best stretch and its busiest — March through May the grass is green, the wind is steady enough for sailing, and weekend afternoons fill with family parties that spill from the picnic areas onto the open lawn. Summer belongs to early mornings and late evenings; by midday the exposed sections of the loop are punishing and the crowd relocates to the aquatic center, while the golden hour before sunset produces the year’s best photographs of aircraft crossing the water. Autumn is the most comfortable season for the loop itself, with October mornings cool, the light long, and the trail busy with runners preparing for the region’s race calendar. Winter is quiet and mild, the lake holds wintering waterfowl, the bare trees open the view across the water toward the airport, and hard freezes are brief and rare enough that the loop stays usable almost every day of the year.

Worth knowing

The lake takes its name from the Reverend John B. Bachman, a Methodist preacher and farmer who settled in the area in the 1850s; the Bachman family held a substantial land grant here, and the ground that now carries the airport, the lake and the recreation center came out of it. The City of Dallas acquired the land at the turn of the twentieth century and dammed Bachman Branch in 1903, which makes this the city’s first purpose-built municipal reservoir — and its first failure of scale, since the city outgrew it almost immediately and turned to White Rock Lake in 1911. The treatment plant, however, never stopped: Dallas Water Utilities still runs the Bachman plant, the oldest of the city’s operating water treatment facilities. The modern story of the park is a reconstruction story. Dredging began in July 2019 and finished in April 2023, removing 154,441 cubic yards of accumulated sediment and 3,125 tons of debris from a lake bed that had not been cleaned out in generations. Work on the dam and spillways followed from December 2023, replacing the service spillway with a larger structure, relocating the auxiliary spillway so that major storms would stop flooding adjacent property, adding a drawdown structure for extreme events, and rebuilding the trail above the flood line with new lighting and seating; the engineering firm Stantec designed the widened, ADA-accessible section over the dam. The ribbon cutting was held on 31 March 2026. The result is a park that is functionally new while being, by date of construction, the oldest artificial lake Dallas ever made.

Visitor tips

• Take the train. Bachman Station is on the Green and Orange lines and sits right at the park, which makes this the rare Dallas destination where transit beats driving and parking outright.
• Stand on the northern shore in the late afternoon if you have come for the aircraft — the light is behind you, the approach is low, and the water gives you a reflection to work with.
• Go early in summer. The dam crossing and the western side have no shade at all, and the loop that feels trivial in October is genuinely hard at two in the afternoon in July.

Questions and answers

How long is the loop around Bachman Lake? Roughly 3.1 to 3.3 miles of paved, flat, continuous trail with exercise stations. Most people walk it in an hour to an hour and a half; on a bike it is about twenty minutes.

Can you swim in the lake? No. Bachman Lake is not a swimming lake. The swimming option in the park is the Bachman Family Aquatics Center, the outdoor community facility that opened in July 2023, together with the indoor pool at the recreation center.

Is the park good for watching planes? Yes, and this is its signature. The lake lies along the northwestern boundary of Dallas Love Field directly under the approach, so arriving aircraft pass low over the water. The northern shore is the standard viewing position.

Can I get there by DART? Easily. Bachman Station is immediately adjacent to the park and is served by both the Green and the Orange lines, putting the shoreline a few minutes’ walk from the platform.

Is fishing allowed? Yes. The lake is regularly stocked with catfish and is fished from banks and piers around the shoreline; bass and sunfish are also taken here. A Texas fishing license applies as it does anywhere else in the state.
