Sweet sixteen gets treated as a girls’ occasion. What is the equivalent for a boy, and what belongs in the card?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nThere is no boys’ version with a name attached, and that is mostly an advantage: you are not writing against a script somebody else already wrote. What sixteen means for a boy here is the permit, the first real paycheck, and a schedule his parents no longer fully control. Those are what he is proud of and quietly nervous about at the same time, so those are what the card should name. Skip the party-size language and write to the shift in standing: he is being handed decisions, and you think he can carry them. A line saying you would trust him with the keys does more work than any amount of sweet-sixteen framing, and it still holds up if there is no party at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The real present is cash or a gift card. How do you keep the card from being nothing but the envelope it came in?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nWrite the message first and put the money in afterward, even if that means opening the card twice. When the words get written on top of the envelope they turn into a receipt \u2014 here you go, spend it well \u2014 and he will read six of those before dinner. The fix is to say what the money is for in his terms rather than yours: toward the amp, toward the trip in the spring, toward whatever he has been saving for since fall. Twenty-one is a review birthday, because by then there is finally something to look at. He has finished something, quit something, moved somewhere, or held a job through a bad stretch. So write eighteen about what he is allowed to do and twenty-one about what he has already done with the allowance. That also changes who you sound like. At eighteen you are still partly handing something over; at twenty-one you are talking across the table to another adult, and the card should read that way or he will notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He turns eighteen and moves out a few months later. Does the card mention the leaving, or is that somebody else’s conversation?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nMention it once, in the future tense, and do not let it become the subject. A card that spends four sentences on the departure turns into a preemptive goodbye, and he still has months of ordinary life in the house first. One line covers it: that you know what is coming, that you think he is ready, and that a change of address changes nothing else. Spend the rest on the readiness rather than the distance, and name the specific thing about him that makes you confident \u2014 eighteen-year-olds are far less sure of that than they let on. If you are the parent writing it, skip the instructions: a card that ends in advice reads as a list of conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ten is the first double-digit birthday, and grown-ups make more of that than kids do. Is it worth building the message around?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nThe number on its own is a grown-up’s idea of a milestone, and a card that is mostly arithmetic will land flat. What is real at ten is the widening: he has started doing things without an adult standing behind him, he has picked up interests nobody in the house gave him, and he has begun to notice when he is being talked down to. Use the double digits as your opening line and spend the rest of the card on that.
