There is a large parking area at the site, and most visitors drive. On transit, DART&#8217;s White Rock station on the Blue Line is the nearest rail stop, with bus service covering the corridor between the station and the lake; this is a park that rewards a car more than most in the city. Entry is free \u2014 there is no admission to the park, the hill, the playground or the trail \u2014 and it keeps standard Dallas park hours, generally from early morning to late evening. Some events on the hill are separately organized and may have their own arrangements. Allow an hour for a casual visit, longer if you bring children to the playground or are walking any part of the lake loop.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_to_visit\"><\/span>When to visit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Spring is the park&#8217;s best season and its busiest: steady wind for kites, wildflowers around the lake, comfortable temperatures and the fireworks and concert crowds that fill the hill. Summer is hot and largely shadeless on the crest \u2014 come early or in the evening, when the hill catches whatever breeze exists and the sunset over the water is the reward. Autumn brings back the wind and the good walking weather, with the lake at its most pleasant and far fewer people than in spring. Winter is mild, clear and quiet, the bare trees open the views toward downtown, and on the rare occasions Dallas gets ice or snow the slope is claimed within the hour by anyone with something to slide on.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Good_to_know\"><\/span>Good to know<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Before it was a park, this rise was known as Doran&#8217;s Point, named for William Doran (1847\u20131931), the city commissioner who negotiated the purchase of the land that became White Rock Lake Park. The City of Dallas bought 464 acres from Church Goforth in 1909 as part of assembling the ground for the White Rock Lake reservoir, which supplied the city&#8217;s water. Between 1935 and 1939 the Civilian Conservation Corps, working with the city, built a picnic pavilion, a combination building named for Doran, and an overlook crowned by a flagpole \u2014 which is where the park&#8217;s name comes from. CCC Company 2896 was responsible for a whole series of structures around the lake in these years, including Sunset Inn, Winfrey Point, and the entrance signs and bridges. From 1941 to 1971 the radio station WRR broadcast from a transmitter on the hill. In the twenty-first century the park has been the subject of a sustained community effort: the nonprofit For the Love of the Lake began fundraising in 2015 for a universally designed playground, and the wider improvement program has included restoration of the three historic structures, parking and roadway upgrades, prairie conservation and better trail connections.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Visitor_tips\"><\/span>Visitor tips<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Bring a kite. It sounds obvious, and it is still the single best use of this hill on a breezy day.<\/li>\n<li>Come at the end of the day in summer. There is very little shade on the crest, and the sunset over the lake is what the elevation is for.<\/li>\n<li>Combine it with the lake loop.
