In October 2012 the city stopped trying to route people around the trench and simply roofed it. Klyde Warren Park is a little over five acres of lawn, trees, fountains and playgrounds resting on more than three hundred pre-stressed concrete box beams, with eight lanes of traffic moving underneath at speed. It works because nothing about it announces the engineering: you sit on grass, a food truck is thirty steps away, a jazz trio is warming up on the pavilion stage, and only the low hum under your feet gives away that you are standing on a bridge. It cost roughly $110 million, drew over a million visitors in its first year, and now runs past two million a year with more than 1,300 events, all of the programming free.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Highlights\"><\/span>Highlights<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The deck itself<\/strong> \u2014 more than 300 pre-stressed concrete box beams laid in groups, with slabs bridging the gaps to form roughly 100 trenches that work as continuous planter boxes; 180 tons of lightweight geofoam replaced about 9,600 cubic yards of soil so the trees could have real root volume without crushing the structure below.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Nancy Best Fountain<\/strong> \u2014 opened in September 2022 and designed by the Los Angeles firm Fluidity Design Consultants, with the steel fabricated locally by Big D Metalworks: three stainless-steel &#8220;trees&#8221; fifteen feet tall, 14 rosebud bubblers and 106 nozzles that combine into giant water &#8220;leaves,&#8221; throwing water more than fifty feet up over a splash pad of 5,000 square feet.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Sheila and Jody Grant Children&#8217;s Park<\/strong> \u2014 18,000 square feet, reopened in November 2022 after an expansion funded by a $5 million gift from the Perot family, with a 35-foot climbing tower and slide, a child-scaled climbing wall, a tree-top lookout and two separate water-play features, for ages twelve and under.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Ginsburg Family Great Lawn<\/strong> \u2014 28,000 square feet of open turf that doubles as the concert floor, the yoga studio, the film screen and the picnic ground, backed by the 2,300-square-foot Muse Family Performance Pavilion.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The food truck lane<\/strong> \u2014 around nine rotating vendors park along the park&#8217;s edge on a commission arrangement rather than a rent, which keeps the roster changing and the queues moving; a full-service restaurant and a grab-and-go counter operate inside the park building.<\/li>\n<li><strong>My Best Friend&#8217;s Park<\/strong> \u2014 a fenced dog run on a freeway lid, which is exactly as improbable as it sounds and is one of the busiest small dog parks in the city on a spring evening.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_inside\"><\/span>What&#8217;s inside<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The layout reads as a sequence of rooms rather than one open field, and that is deliberate: on five acres you cannot afford dead space, so every square foot is assigned a use. Circulation runs along a central promenade with the lawns, gardens and play areas hung off it, and the whole park is planted with 322 trees, 904 shrubs and 3,292 groundcover and perennial plants drawn from about 37 species, more than half of them native to North Texas.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Ginsburg Family East Lawn and a separate 10,000-square-foot recreation lawn, which absorb the overflow when the Great Lawn is booked for an event.<\/li>\n<li>The Reading and Games Room and the Grant Family Arcade, where books, board games, chess sets, ping-pong and foosball are handed out free and returned on trust.<\/li>\n<li>A botanical garden and children&#8217;s garden strip, plus the shaded Chase Promenade and the Esplanade, which are where you actually want to sit in July.<\/li>\n<li>The Sowden Family Pavilion and the Nancy Collins Fisher Pavilion, both rentable for birthdays and private gatherings, plus Moody Plaza and The Porch.<\/li>\n<li>Movable furniture on a scale most parks never attempt \u2014 roughly 143 small round tables, 48 larger ones and several hundred loose chairs, all deliberately unfixed so people rearrange the park themselves.<\/li>\n<li>A subgrade graywater reservoir holding around 12,000 gallons, feeding irrigation and closing the loop on a surface that is now more than half permeable where a freeway roof would be entirely sealed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_to_do_and_who_its_for\"><\/span>What to do and who it&#8217;s for<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Museum visitors<\/strong> \u2014 the park is the natural halfway point of the Arts District, within a short walk of the Dallas Museum of Art, the Nasher Sculpture Center, the Crow Museum of Asian Art, the Meyerson Symphony Center and the Perot Museum.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Office workers<\/strong> \u2014 the lunch hour is the park&#8217;s busiest slot; the food trucks and the loose seating exist because the surrounding towers empty into it every weekday at noon.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Parents of small children<\/strong> \u2014 the children&#8217;s park and the fountain splash pad together give you a couple of hours of free, supervised-adjacent entertainment in the middle of downtown, with restrooms on site.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Anyone chasing free programming<\/strong> \u2014 fitness classes, yoga, storytime, language meetups, live music and dance nights under the pavilion run on a published calendar and cost nothing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dog owners<\/strong> \u2014 the fenced run is small but genuinely useful in a district where private yards do not exist.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Visitors with one free hour<\/strong> \u2014 it is the single most efficient stop in downtown Dallas: you can see the skyline, eat well, sit on grass and understand the city&#8217;s ambitions in sixty minutes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Getting_there_and_practicalities\"><\/span>Getting there and practicalities<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The park spans three downtown blocks on the seam between the Arts District and Uptown. It is the rare Dallas destination where driving is the worst option. Two DART light-rail stations sit within a few minutes&#8217; walk \u2014 St. Paul Station and Pearl\/Arts District Station \u2014 and both are served by the Red, Blue, Green and Orange lines, which means essentially the whole rail network reaches the park with no transfer. The free M-Line Trolley stops at the park&#8217;s edge and connects it up through Uptown; trolley ridership rose about 61 percent after the park opened and three new stops were added to serve it. Entry is free and there are no gates. The lawns and paths are open from early morning until late evening, while the children&#8217;s park and the fountain run daily from eight in the morning to ten at night, the fountain performing at noon, seven and eight with a silent show until closing whenever the temperature is above 55\u00b0F. Allow one hour for a walk-through, two to three for a meal and a lawn session, half a day if you are pairing it with a museum. On heat: measurements have found the park running between one and nine degrees Fahrenheit cooler than the surrounding zip code average, which is real but does not make a July afternoon pleasant. The tree canopy is still maturing and the Great Lawn has no shade at all, so from June through September the usable hours are before ten in the morning and after seven in the evening \u2014 and the fountain, deliberately, is the exception that makes midday tolerable for children.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_to_visit\"><\/span>When to visit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Spring is the park at full strength: March through May, the lawn covered in blankets, the food truck queue stretching down the lane, the trees leafing out and the evening concerts starting. Summer flips the schedule entirely \u2014 the daylight hours belong to the fountain and to whoever can find a bench under the promenade trees, while the real crowd arrives after sunset for outdoor films, dance nights and a skyline that finally cools down. Autumn is the most underrated stretch: October in Dallas is close to perfect, the light goes long and gold across the lawn in the late afternoon, and the programming calendar is as dense as in spring. Winter is mild, quiet and clear \u2014 a good season for the Reading and Games Room, the holiday lighting and an uninterrupted look at the towers through bare branches, and from the expansion onward a portion of the new lawn is designed to freeze over as a skating rink.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Worth_knowing\"><\/span>Worth knowing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The idea of decking the freeway had been discussed since the 1960s, but the version that got built came together in the 2000s under a civic campaign led by Jody and Sheila Grant, working through the Woodall Rodgers Park Foundation. The funding was deliberately mixed: about $20 million in City of Dallas bond money, roughly $20 million in state and federal highway funds, $16.7 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, and close to $50 million in private gifts. The largest of those, $10 million from the pipeline executive Kelcy Warren, carried naming rights, and Warren gave the name to his son Klyde, who was ten years old at the time. The Office of James Burnett did the landscape architecture, Thomas Phifer and Partners designed the 6,000-square-foot restaurant and stage building at the center, and Jacobs Engineering Group handled the structural work. The park opened on 27 October 2012 to about 40,000 visitors in a single weekend. Its measured effects have been unusually well documented: a neighboring office tower nearly tripled in appraised value between 2008 and 2013, the plantings sequester roughly 18,500 pounds of carbon dioxide a year and intercept around 64,214 gallons of stormwater, and the roughly $2 million annual operating budget is raised privately rather than drawn from the city. The park&#8217;s original restaurant, Savor, closed in August 2020 after pandemic trade collapsed; a Tex-Mex operator now runs the building. A second phase announced for 2026 will extend the deck nearly two more acres westward over the last recessed stretch of freeway, adding a glass-and-steel event pavilion designed by Jacobs with HKS and Gensler \u2014 about 24,000 square feet of climate-controlled space on two levels plus an 8,000-square-foot rooftop terrace \u2014 along with the 37,000-square-foot Jacobs Lawn and an overlook built to let you watch traffic pass beneath the park. Construction is expected to take around two years, delivered with TxDOT and the North Central Texas Council of Governments.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Visitor_tips\"><\/span>Visitor tips<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Come at noon on a weekday if you want the food trucks at full strength, and at dusk on a weekend if you want the park at its best-looking. The two experiences share almost nothing.<\/li>\n<li>Bring a towel and dry clothes for children in summer \u2014 the fountain is designed to be played in, not looked at, and no child who sees it stays dry.<\/li>\n<li>Take the rail. The park is a structural deck over the sunken Woodall Rodgers Freeway, carried on more than 300 concrete box beams, with traffic running underneath while you sit on the lawn.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is it free?<\/strong> Entry is free, there are no gates, and the entire programming calendar \u2014 concerts, fitness classes, storytime, games \u2014 is free as well. The park is run by a non-profit on a roughly $2 million annual budget raised privately.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How long should I allow?<\/strong> An hour for a straightforward walk-through. Two to three hours if you eat, sit and let children loose on the playground and fountain. Half a day if you combine it with one of the neighboring museums.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can children swim in the fountain?<\/strong> They can play in it, which is the point. The Nancy Best Fountain has a 5,000-square-foot splash pad, runs on recirculated, continuously filtered and sanitized water, and operates daily from eight in the morning to ten at night whenever the temperature is above 55\u00b0F.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are dogs allowed?<\/strong> Yes. There is a fenced dog run inside the park, and leashed dogs are welcome on the paths and lawns. It is one of very few off-leash options in the downtown core.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is the best way to get there?<\/strong> Light rail. St. Paul Station and Pearl\/Arts District Station are both a few minutes away on foot and are served by all four DART lines, and the free M-Line Trolley stops at the park itself. Driving is possible but parking is the weak point.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is it worth visiting in summer?<\/strong> Yes, but in the evening. Between about ten in the morning and seven at night from June to September the Great Lawn is unshaded and unforgiving. After sunset the park is one of the pleasantest places downtown, and the fountain rescues the daytime for families.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is the park changing?<\/strong> Substantially. A second phase starting in 2026 adds nearly two acres westward, a two-level event pavilion with a rooftop terrace, a 37,000-square-foot festival lawn that converts to a winter ice rink, and an
