It was founded in 1888. In 2023, more than 2,000 animals of about 400 different species live here. Since the 1980s, the government has allocated separate funding for the development of the zoo. This allowed to replenish the collection of animals with new species in the following years.

In 1910, the zoo was temporarily moved to Fair Park. Two years later, a separate 36-acre area was allocated for the animals in the Marsalis Park area, where it began to expand to its current size of 106 acres.

By the 1960s, the Dallas Zoo had become a popular recreation spot among city residents and visitors. At that time, the collection of animals included about 500 different species of animals. Over time, the zoo began to change its policy from simply making money by showing animals to conducting scientific research, providing exhibits of rare, exotic and local animal species, preserving them and developing the basics of captive breeding.

What can you see at the Dallas Zoo?

The territory of the zoo is divided into two large parts. The site covers an area of 2 acres and resembles a wild forest with streams, lakes and rocks where tigers live in nature. $4.5 million was spent on its construction. The enclosure was opened to the public in May 1999. Sumatran and Malayan tigers live here

The Lacerte Family Children’s Zoo. This is a separate menagerie where children and adults can interact with animals, stroke and feed them, ride a pony and take photos. Horses, goats, sheep and rams, donkeys, pigs, rabbits and other domestic animals and birds live here. There is also a children’s playground in this area

Exhibition of insects. Penguins will be the first to be seen coming out of the tunnel. African penguins have a deep pool with a waterfall in which they can swim

Chimpanzee Forest. Conditions close to nature have also been created for chimpanzees similar to the enclosure with tigers. The area was created in 1997 and has the appearance of a forest with waterfalls, streams, rocks and even an artificial termite mound

Gorilla Research Center. It consists of two gorilla enclosures made as a wild forest with an area of 2 acres

Crocodile Isle. Nile crocodiles live here.
