How the McCommas Bluff Landfill operates

Humanity started using landfills to dispose of waste in the late 1800s and early 1900s. They have gained popularity since the 1940s. In today’s world, they have become the most common way to dispose of trash. At the same time, they have caused the problem of environmental overloading with waste, which pollutes the air, soil and groundwater with toxic substances. That, in turn, negatively affects people’s health. But while in the past dumping grounds could solely pollute local ecosystems, today’s landfills are equipped with sophisticated technology that minimizes environmental pollution. It is the state’s largest landfill and the fifteenth largest in the country. Several thousand tons of trash are dumped here per day, but the surprising thing is that the landfill has no stink.

At the end of each day, a team of landfill workers places a six-inch-thick layer of dirt on top of the trash to help cover up the stink, which also attracts stray dogs and rats. Moreover, such a measure allowed to give the landfill a more attractive appearance, resembling more of a construction site than a massive pile of trash.

Making money off the trash

Maintaining a landfill always requires a lot of money because every year, the amount of waste is increasing while the place for it is getting smaller and smaller. A vacant lot at a landfill is worth its weight in gold, so providing it for use by those willing to pay for it is one way to make money.

Moreover, at McCommas Bluff Landfill, they have learned not only how to get rid of the waste but also make money off it. They actively use bioreactor technology to decompose waste. This landfill was the first in the state to use such a technology. When trash piles are just sitting in landfills, they produce methane. As they decompose, they often cause fires in the landfill. As a way to get rid of this toxic gas, some landfills routinely incinerate it, while others, like McCommas Bluff, have learned to capture it and put it to good use. In Dallas, for example, they sell methane from the landfill to Atmos Energy and pump it into pipelines, plus they use bioreactor technology to speed up the decomposition process. For this purpose, on the east side of the landfill, there is a tower that accumulates sludge wastewater enriched with bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms. It is then pumped through pipes with holes that run all over the landfill. Once the trash is irrigated with this water, the process of its active decomposition begins.

Additionally, vertical pipes are installed on the dumping ground to collect the gas and transport it to a processing plant on the west side of the landfill. That’s where the gas is separated, sterilized and made ready for sale. Such technology allows to extend the life of the dumping ground, as well as it has become an additional source of profit for the city. The landfill makes about 5.5 million cubic feet of gas per day.

How to reduce city pollution

To reduce pollution, Dallas residents are encouraged to get involved in sorting waste for recycling efficiently and learn to give things a second life. They are also encouraged to rationally use products and materials that are not recyclable or replace them with materials that do not harm the environment or all life. It will help reduce the load on the landfills and improve the city’s environmental condition.

Humanity started using landfills to dispose of waste in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
